Three Ways to Connect With Your Higher Self
This piece is meant to accompany the Walk With Spirits: Haunted Historic Pub Crawl I lead in San Francisco- a great way to begin exploring spirituality.
Things are changing- can you feel it? We are entering a new era, a new age- one where the belief systems and societal structures that have been exploiting us are beginning to collapse before our very eyes.
And it’s not a pretty picture. As a matter of fact, if you take a look around you, things are pretty crazy!
But what if I told you that we already have the tools inside us to navigate this new era?
And even when we feel alone, we never truly are? Sometimes it’s as simple as asking for help.
Here are some ways to help you get started:
1. Reconnect with your inner child.
When we are children, we are better able to manifest things. We are not bogged down by the troubles of “adulting”- we see and experience the world through a much simpler lens. Think about a time before the complications of money, romantic relationships, and bills.
What sets off the fireworks in your heart? Is it nature? The plant kingdom? Rocks, minerals, crystals? For me it has always been The Animals. My entire life I’ve enjoyed a special connection-a downright obsession, with The Animals. I grew up with almost every pet you’ve seen at a pet store at some point in my life and some of the most important relationships in my life have been those I have formed with the pets I have owned.
The Animals are healers and the most patient teachers but undoubtedly the greatest gift they have given me is unconditional love (but more on that later).
How can you reconnect with your inner child?
2. Ask your ancestors for help.
Other cultures seem to have a much healthier relationship with death and the afterlife than we do here in the United States.
Latinos celebrate Dia de los Muertos, but I did not grow up recognizing the traditions and customs of the beautiful day. October 2023 was the first time I properly celebrated Dia de los Muertos (you can see the steps I took to create my ofrenda here) and I know it has cemented itself in my life as an annual tradition.
I keep an altar up year-round to acknowledge my ancestors. The altar is next to my bed so that it is the first thing I see when I wake up in the morning, and the last thing I see when I go to bed at night- a constant reminder to be grateful for the life my ancestors have given me.
I also ask for them for help. A lot.
There isn’t a single obstacle you’ll face that your ancestors can’t help you overcome.
Have you even bothered to ask?
3. Love.
Yes, it really is that simple.
Love, in its purest form, is the highest vibration- the grand purpose of this amazing gift we call life. Get out there and love, love, love. A wise person taught me to never regret the good things you do for others. Love!
But before you can truly love anyone, the truth is, you must love yourself. Once you realize this and apply it to every aspect of your life, you will experience a fulfillment few ever will.
Love in its purest form is not motivated by reciprocity- Love rewards us with compassion, gratitude, and deeper understanding.
And while I never said Love was easy, I do truly like what the Christian Bible says about love:
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. – 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
